Why DERMS?

Deployment of high number of renewable energy resources shows that new functionality is required to keep track of the generation and the impact on the network as well as to exert control.

DER are spreading over MV and LV side of the grid and coping with vast distribution generation needs new tools at both control center and grid edge sides to keep the grid balanced, resilient, efficient and economic.

Calculation of distribution load flow, optimal power flow, state estimation and handling outages in presence of DERs are major functionalities for today's Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) which are integration of SCADA/DMS/OMS and DERMS systems.

DERMS functionalities include but not limited to:

  • Modelling of DERs
  • DER aggregation and grouping
  • Visualization of DERs
  • Control and automation of DER
  • DER Forecasting
  • Energy Management functionalities for DERs
  • Simulation and Study mode
  • Handling DER contract related reports
  • Congestion Management
  • Group Commanding

DER Visualization

On the transmission and subtransmission level, the renewable energy resources are typically of “farm” type, i.e. smaller components (PV panels, windmills) are integrated forming a “large” generator.

In the distribution network, the DERs are shown as a tag characterizing that DER is connected to the transformer substation.

Group visualization, easy commanding and handling of individual and groups of DERs, coloring, topology management, integration into GIS system and visualization are among required features for DER visualization subsystem.

Dependent on local laws, DER may be remote-controllable.

This will often depend on the generation being larger than a defined threshold. Where technically possible, a cos(φ) value can be set for the inverter.

This can help to maintain the voltage level. In congestion situations, power reduction is a means to an end.An overload situation is to be corrected and in the course of actions power reductions or increases may

occur. For this task, a closed loop controller shall be provided .
